Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Set Your Own Audio File as Ringtone in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

If you'd like to have a different ringtone in your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, instead of using preloaded tones as ringtone, you can set your own audio file, such as .mp3 file, as ringtone. You can set your phone to play the selected part of the song or the whole song when receiving incoming calls.


How to set your own audio file as ringtone?
As the example, we'll set a .mp3 file as ringtone by using two different methods: from the settings menu and from a contact's detail page.

Method #1: From the settings menu
You can set a .mp3 file as the default ringtone for all contacts, except those that have been assigned to the different ringtone(see method #2), by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Sounds and vibration and then tap it.
  3. Tap Ringtone.
  4. Tap Ringtone to set default ringtone for incoming calls.
  5. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap Add from device storage.
  6. In the Complete action using window, tap Sound picker to select the required song from the Music player app.
  7. Tap the required song you want to use. By default, your phone will only set the highlighted part of the selected song as ringtone. However, if you'd like your phone plays the whole song, clear the checkbox in the left side of the Highlights only option to disable it. Tap Done button to save the changes.
  8. The selected song has been set as the default ringtone.

Method #2: From a contact's detail page
When needed, you can set a .mp3 file as ringtone for a specific contact, e.g., your important or favourite contacts, so you can easily know when receiving calls from that contact by using the following steps:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap the required contact you want to change its ringtone.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap More to see more available fields for the selected contact.
  5. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap Ringtone.
  6. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap Add from device storage.
  7. In the Complete action using window, tap Sound picker to select the required song from the Music player app.
  8. Tap the required song you want to use. By default, your phone will only set the highlighted part of the selected song as ringtone. However, if you'd like your phone plays the whole song, clear the checkbox in the left side of the Highlights only option to disable it. Tap Done button to save the changes.
  9. Tap Save button to save the changes.
  10. The selected song has been assigned as the ringtone for the selected contact.

The most common way that can be taken to help you easily know when you have calls is by assigning a ringtone so your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will play it when receiving incoming calls, in condition that the sound profile in your phone is set to sound. When needed, you can set other pre-loaded tone available as ringtone when you're bored with the current one or want to use different one.


How to change ringtone?
You can set the required ringtone for incoming calls by using two different methods: from the settings menu and from a contact's detail page.

Method #1: From the settings menu

You can use this method to set your own music or mp3 as ringtone for incoming calls from a specific contact. Use the following steps to set your own music or mp3 as caller ringtone from the Contacts app:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap the required contact you want to change its ringtone.
  3. Tap Edit at the top of the screen to edit the selected contact.
  4. Tap Ringtone.
  5. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap + Add ringtone.
  6. Tap Sound picker to select song from the stock Music player app and then tap Just once or Always(select this option if you'd like to set this selection as the default).
  7. Tap the required song you want to set as caller ringtone. By default, your phone will only set the highlighted part as ringtone. If you'd like your phone plays the whole song, clear the checkbox in the left side of the Highlights only option. Tap Done button at the top right.

But, you have to remember that you can't manually choose which part of the song that can be used as a ringtone since it'll be chosen automatically by the device.


How to set a part of a song as a ringtone?
You can do so by using some methods. But, in this post, we'll try to set a part of a song as a ringtone by using two different methods: from the general settings menu and from the stock Music Player app.


Method #1: From the general settings menu
You can set the recommended part of a song as a ringtone from the general settings menu by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then select Sound .
  3. Tap Ringtones.
  4. Tap Add button.
  5. Tap Sound picker and then you're free to either tap Always button or Just once button to continue.
  6. Make sure to check the box in the right side of the Auto recommendation at the bottom of the screen to enable this option and let your device extracts the highlights from the song and then use it as a ringtone.
  7. Now, select the required song. You'll get the sound preview when you tap a song so that you'll get an idea how it might sound when it's enabled.
  8. Tap Done button.
  9. The highlighted part of the selected song has been set as a ringtone.


Method #2: From the Stock Music Player App
You can set the recommended part of a song as a ringtone from the the stock Music Player app by using the following steps:
  1. Open the stock Music Player app.
  2. Tap the Tracks tab to see your song list.
  3. Long tap the required song.
  4. Tap at the top right to open up the additional options and then select Set as.
  5. Tap Auto recommendations to select this option and let your device extracts the highlights from the song and use it as a ringtone.
  6. Tap Phone ringtone to select this option and set the highlighted part of the selected song as a ringtone.
  7. Tap Done button.
  8. The highlighted part of the selected song has been set as a ringtone.
