Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Setup and Use Direction Lock Feature in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Direction lock is an additional screen lock type that you can use to unlock the screen if you have enabled it in the Accessibility menu. When it's enabled, you can unlock the screen by drawing the direction combination that you set in advance.


How to setup the direction lock feature?
As the example, we'll do so when the current screen lock type is set to PIN by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Accessibility and then tap it. FYI, if you have enabled the direct access feature and selected Accessibility, you can quickly access the accessibility menu by pressing the Home key three times in quick succession to open up the direct access menu and then tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Direction lock.
  4. Slide the ON/OFF switch to the right to enable the direction lock feature.
  5. Enter the current 4-digit PIN numbers and then tap Next button.
  6. Now, draw a series of four to eight directions(left, right, up or down) and then tap Continue button.
  7. Draw the direction combination again to verify it and then tap Confirm button.
  8. The direction lock has been set as the screen lock type.
  9. When needed, while you're in the direction lock menu, you can enable or disable the following options:
    • Vibration feedback: enable this option to have your phone vibrates when you draw the direction combination to unlock the screen.
    • Sound feedback: enable this option to have your phone plays a sound when you draw the direction combination to unlock the screen.
    • Show directions: enable this option to have your phone shows the direction arrows when you draw the direction combination to unlock the screen.
    • Read drawn directions aloud: enable this option to have your phone reads aloud the direction when you draw the direction combination to unlock the screen.


How to use the direction lock feature?
You can unlock the screen using the direction lock by using the following steps:
  1. When the screen is turned off, press the Power key to turn it on.
  2. Swipe your finger on the lock screen and then draw series of directions that you have set before to unlock the screen.
  3. If you draw the right combination, the screen will be unlocked and you can use your phone.

Note: The direction lock feature in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow won't give you the option to enter the PIN number as the alternative way to unlock the screen when you enter the combination incorrectly 5 times or so. You're just asked to try again in a couple of seconds. Thus, if you decide to use this feature, make sure to remember or write down the combination somewhere that you can use to remember when you forget it. However, if you have enabled the auto factory reset feature, your phone will automatically reset to the factory settings if you have drawn the combination incorrectly 15 times.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Enable and Use Smart Lock On Body Detection Feature in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

On-body detection is one of smart lock features in Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that can be used when you're using one of screen lock types with secure lock settings(pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprints). When this feature is enabled, you just need to unlock the screen once and it'll stay unlocked while your phone is safe with you, as the example, when you're holding your phone in your hand, when you're carrying it in your pocket or handbag, etc.


How to enable the smart lock on body detection feature?
As the example, we'll turn on this feature when the screen lock type is set to PIN by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Secure lock settings.
  4. Tap Smart Lock.
  5. Enter 4-digit PIN numbers and then tap Done button.
  6. Tap On-body detection.
  7. Slide the ON/OFF switch to the right to enable the on body detection feature.
  8. A pop up window appears on the screen to inform you that since on-body detection can't always distinguish between you and someone else, if you give your phone to someone else or if someone takes your phone while it's unlocked with on-body detection, they might be able to access it. Tap Continue button to continue enabling the on-body detection feature.
  9. The smart lock on-body detection feature is enabled.


How to use the smart lock on body detection feature?
As the example, we'll use this feature when the screen lock type is set to PIN by using the following steps:
  1. On the lock screen, swipe your finger on the screen and then enter 4-digit PIN numbers followed by tapping OK button to unlock the screen.
  2. Your phone will stay unlocked while it's on you, even when the current automatic screen lock delay period is over. In this state, you just need to turn on the screen and then swipe your finger on the lock screen if you'd like to access your phone.
  3. When you set down the phone, such as, on the table, it'll lock automatically after the current automatic screen lock delay period is over. If the screen is not locked, you can tap on the lock screen to force the phone to lock securely while the smart lock on-body detection is enabled.

When you're changing screen lock type in your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge to one of those with secure lock settings(pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprints), you'll be asked to select which display option you'd like to use for notifications on the lock screen. However, you can also change this setting anytime you want with ease to suit your need. You can set your phone to show notifications come from all or some apps with or without its contents on the lock screen, or turn off lock screen notifications.


How to change display option for notifications on the lock screen?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Notifications on lock screen.
  4. Tap Content on lock screen and then select from the following options:
    • Show content: select this option to show notifications and its contents on the lock screen. This option is enabled by default.
    • Hide content: select this option to show notifications without its contents on the lock screen.
    • Do not show notifications: select this option to turn off notifications on the lock screen.
  5. By default, if you select Show content, your phone will display notifications come from all apps and its contents on the lock screen. But, when needed, you can turn off lock screen notifications of the specific apps while you're using this setting. As the example, slide the ON/OFF switch next to Facebook app to the left if you don't want your phone displays notifications come from Facebook app on the lock screen.
  6. By default, if you select Hide content, your phone will display notifications come from all apps without its contents on the lock screen. But, when needed, you can turn off lock screen notifications of the specific apps while you're using this setting. As the example, slide the ON/OFF switch next to Facebook app to the left if you don't want your phone displays notifications come from Facebook app on the lock screen.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Enable or Disable Auto Factory Reset Feature in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

When you're using one of screen lock types with secure lock settings(pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprints), you can enable the auto factory reset feature to have your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge automatically resets to factory settings if you or others attempt to unlock the phone incorrectly 15 times. This feature will give you two advantages: 1) it will provide you an easier way to factory reset your phone when you forget your screen lock method than if you have to do so manually from the recovery mode, 2) it will prevent unauthorised people from accessing or using information saved in your phone when it lost or stolen.


How to enable or disable the auto factory reset feature?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Secure lock settings.
  4. Tap the ON/OFF switch next to Auto factory reset to enable or disable this option. When the switch turns blue , means the auto factory reset feature is enabled and your phone will perform factory reset automatically if you or others attempt to unlock the phone incorrectly 15 times. Please note that performing factory reset will delete all data, including files and downloaded apps.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Enable or Disable Lock Instantly with Power Key Feature in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

When needed, you can enable the lock instantly with power key feature to assign the power key as the screen lock key so when you press this key, it will not only turn off the screen backlight, but also instantly lock the screen. It comes handy when you need to quickly secure your phone from unauthorised access without you have to wait until the current automatic screen lock delay is over.


How to enable or disable the lock instantly with power key feature?
Assuming that you use one of the screen lock types with secure lock settings(pattern, PIN, password, or fingerprints), you can turn on or off this feature by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Secure lock settings.
  4. Tap the ON/OFF switch next to Lock instantly with power key to enable or disable this option. When the switch turns blue , means this feature is enabled and the Power key has been assigned as the screen lock key so you can turn off and instantly lock the screen at the same time by pressing the Power key.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Adjust Automatic Screen Lock Delay in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

When the screen turns off automatically after the screen timeout is over while you use one of screen lock types with security lock settings(PIN, password, pattern, or fingerprints), your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will lock the screen automatically after the current automatic screen lock delay is over for security reason. When needed, you can adjust the delay to a shorter period if you concern with the security issue or to a longer period for convenient access to your phone.


How to adjust the automatic screen lock delay?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Secure lock settings.
  4. Tap Lock automatically and then select from the following options:
    • Immediately: select this option to automatically lock the screen once the screen is turned off automatically.
    • 5 seconds
    • 15 seconds
    • 30 seconds
    • 1 minute
    • 2 minutes
    • 5 minutes
    • 10 minutes
    • 30 minutes
  5. The automatic screen lock delay has been adjusted.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Disable App Shortcuts on Lock Screen in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

By default, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge displays two app shortcuts on the lock screen, the Phone app at the bottom left corner and the Camera app at the bottom right corner, so you can quickly access those apps when you need to make a call or take a picture. But, if you don't like the idea of using lock screen to access apps or just want to clean up your lock screen, you can easily remove one or both of those app shortcuts.


How to remove app shortcuts from the lock screen?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. Scroll down the screen to find Lock screen and security and then tap it.
  3. Tap Info and app shortcuts.
  4. Tap App shortcuts.
  5. To remove the left shortcut from the lock screen, tap Left shortcut and then slide the ON/OFF switch to the left to turn off this feature. When the switch turns gray, means the left shortcut is disabled and removed from the lock screen.
  6. Tap the Back key to return to the previous screen.
  7. To remove the right shortcut from the lock screen, tap Right shortcut and then slide the ON/OFF switch to the left to turn off this feature. When the switch turns gray, means the right shortcut is disabled and removed from the lock screen.
  8. Press the Power key twice to go to the lock screen and see the changes.
